VUCA is a term that is currently very much en vogue. But what does it actually stand for? VUCA is an acronym for
- Complexity and
So VUCA also means: nothing or only very little is predictable – and that is so at a time when technology is enabling us to analyse an unthinkable amount of data and base forecasts on it. Today the weather can therefore be predicted much more accurately and reliably for longer periods of time than it was a few decades ago. But in the business world everything has supposedly become even more mysterious?
Even Heraclitus knew that nothing is more constant than change, so what has changed? The speed, the diversity, the amount of information. So how do you deal with that?
A company that wants to survive in the VUCA world can actually do quite a lot:
- V – In times in which everything is continuously changing, the inherent orientation must remain the same: The vision and strategy as a compass should be clear and unambiguous. Thus, in the event of changing circumstances, every employee immediately knows how he or she should react in the spirit of the common goal.
- U – Everyone deals with insecurity differently. This is where mutual understanding and openness to fresh ideas can work wonders. Diversity brings with it security and stability, especially when different opinions and points of view are heard.
- C – Of course, our world is becoming more and more complex and complicated. However, we can keep all the things that we can influence ourselves very simple. You should therefore analyse the processes and hierarchies in your company: Are they complicated, unclear or bureaucratic? Then change the approach – to simple and target-oriented.
- A – If there are several possible interpretations for a situation, you can proactively adjust to the various possible reactions and effects. This is where agility can have a great effect
In the future, companies will need a clear vision and strategy, mutual understanding, openness to new ideas, a willingness to find clear solutions and agility. Sounds doable, doesn’t it?
